Photos in Paint

Updated: Jan 19, 2024

How could a photo be incorporated in a painting? Traditionally painted portraits cannot compare in authenticity of photos in depicting people and loved ones. Real husband and wife, Engr. Nick and Mam Ellie, are subjects of this art and this art conceptualization must capture them and their family’s devotion for them.

I have recently been checking out mass-produced artworks from Landmark. These mass produced pieces start as printed tarpaulin canvas texture, and then real paint (embossed) is added as wisps and dabs that seem to blend seamlessly with the art. This exploration led me look at existing works and graphics that are created as jpeg:

Another source of inspiration is the photo mosaic editing technique which involves multiple meaningful photos laid on a grid and is layered with a single image typically a portrait with mid-opacity. It is proposed that the family members preselect the photos that will comprise the mosaic of their loved one. It is exciting how a side-view silhouette of the person like shown the couple looks face to face.

Early on, I wanted to use tropical graphics inspired by the site of the artwork, a farm house in Tagaytay. The use of this tropical graphics paired with a couple facing each other hints to an image of Adam and Eve. To turn it to a non-melancholic historical montage, the emotions in the photos and subjects must show the emotion that the artwork aims to be - a celebration of the couple.

To make this concept work, the size of the artwork has to be big enough to appreciate the smaller photos in the mosaic, the space that they will be displayed must be of same size so the pair may look face to face with smiles.
